vertical lines on monitor

sometimes when I first turn on my computer the screen will either turn a solid color (not BSOD)or have solid vertical lines on screen with no display.The computer is not locked up. The reason I know this is because I was downloading some music and the screen turn solid lines so I waited a few minutes and had to manually re-boot but the song had finished downloading. My monitor is new. I think I could have weak video card-chip? I have an ALi 1631 motherboard. But I don’t see a video card. Is it possable I have a chip?
