Very slow performance

by shanghai sam . Updated 24 years, 4 months ago

I have a laptop with windows 2000 professional installed. Lately the Operating System has been running really slow and the hard drive is thrashing quite a lot. I took the following steps trying to make it faster:
1-) I removed the page file from C and redistribute it among the three partitions I have (C,D and E). I made the page file 1.5 times the size of the total ram (512 Mb of RA) I made the size equal minimum and maximun.
2-) I cleaned up the hard disk drive
3-) disk defag and still is running slow.
4-) There is enough space in C for paging.
So far I have not been able to figure out what may be the reason of machine running so slow. Takes forever to open apps but the name resolution is good and the browsing service is runningcorrectly.
I am runnig Zone Alarm. My questions is what else can I do to make this machine to run faster.
Is there a possibility that there is a hardware failure?
or maybe a virus infection???
Need help. As usual, this machine belongs to the company owner.
