virtual memory too low xp professional

I getting stuck with the virtual memory problem in xp professional. The machine configuration is
IV 1.7 GHZ 256MB DDR RAM 40GB HDD. It uses applications such as MS OFFICE AND SAP. I adjusted the paging file for optimum performance and still it showing the same error.
