“Visited” links only around for few days

Windows XP: Using IE, I will visit a site with numerous links, hit those links and leave. They are then indicated (via color change) as having been “visited”. I can return after two or three days and the links have reverted to their “unvisited” color. What gives? I am keeping pages in history for 30 days. I didn’t have this problem in Windows 98
