Visual C++ error message

I have tried Textbridge Pro 8 and Simpleocr 3 programs with my Mustek 1200ub scanner and neither work. Looks like russian. Got error message debug assertions and visual C++ assertions failed. How do I correct this? Using Windows 98 on Compaq 5700n computer. Thanks,
