Volume Locked

I have a laptop running windows xp pro. I received a message on boot up saying that windows required a check disk be preformed. When I take the option to continue I get another message saying that the proceduer can not be run because the volume is locked. MS says that if I install SP2 that the problem will go away. I am already running SP2. Any help on how to unlock the volume will be greatly appreciated.
