W2K crashing with mass storage devices

I have a PC running Windows 2000, I have a maxtor firewire card and a Fuji Firewire Cf/smartmedia reader. If I remove a card after first stopping the device the PC crashes as soon as I put the flap down. The PC als crashes if I connect another mass storage device via a USB port. If I use a Microdrive in it and put the PC on standby, it will reboot after powering up again.

Fuji have sad to reinstall W2k SP2, this has made no difference. I have installed all th latest patchesfor W2K but ikt has made no difference. Help, this is a major pain.
