W2K debug files

I have a Dell running W2K, and I am trying to connect to an IBM network thru HyperTerminal on COM1. It will not connect, but leaves two files on the desktop: comread.dbg and comused.dbg. I know these are debug files, but why are they appearing andhow do I remedy this? Dell support hasn’t been helpful. (COM2 is being used by another application.)
