W2k Pro sharing with Mac OS X

As was the case with NT4, only the Server version of Windows 2000 has “Services for Macintosh” available.
PC W2k SP3, iMac OS X 10.2.3
I tried connecting with a cross-over cable.
I can ping from one to the other.
However, I could not set up shares from either end. Neither box could see the other.

Is it possible to load Services for Macinitosh from a W2k Server CD onto a W2k Pro installation?
I’ll soon be getting a hub. Is there another simple way to connect the two boxes?
