I have tried to recover from this problem using NTFSDOS and ERD Commander 2000 but I am not able to over come it. I even installed another copy of Win2k Pro on the same partition in a different folder e.g. \WINNTSOS and this will boot up normally, so this indicates that the partition is viable. I have also tried to recover using the Win2k recovery console option, [that I had installed previous to my debacle of installing the MS patches. (see note below)], but when I select console recovery thescreen goes blank with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner.
I am able to run CHKDSK with the Winternals ERD Commander in recovery mode but the PC still reboots after I try to login. I am able to run all the Winternals Recovery utilities e.g load the registry in text mode, edit boot.ini, etc… but I still can’t boot to the original Win2k installtion.
I have a 500 Mhz Intel PIII CPU on an Epoc mother board. A Seagate 30 Gb hard drive on a motherboard integrated HighPoint-Technologies ATA66 controller.
note: This partition was stable for over a year until I installed the two security patches from Microsoft that dealt with the bogus VeriSign certificates that VeriSign issued in January 30 and 31st. If you have any suggestions that I might try it would be certainly greatly appreciated as I am not looking forward to rebuilding all my installed software over again. Can any one tell me the differance between the booting system registry and the non-booting system registryto cause this problem?
