W98Setup GPF, DPMI, Corruption

by kck . Updated 25 years, 3 months ago

I am trying to install Windows 98 on a formatted HD. (233mhz ? AMDK6 CPU, 32mg ram, 2 Gig HD) I keep getting errors at the copy files portion. Errors are:

W98Setup caused a general protection fault in module USER.exe at xxxxxxxx.

then after that at the black screen I get:

Standard Mode: Invalid DPMI return from 0367:5F92.

Then I tried installing Windows 95, did not work either, I get error msg:

Setup has detected a corrupt setup (.cab) file. This may be caused by a virus, low conventional memory, bad media or a HDW problem.

I removed all the cards and cables and reseated them. I swapped out the memory-from a computer that works fine, video card, Install CD, monitor, Hard Drive, removed the network card, Antivirus in the CMOS was already disabled. Still same problem!

Then I disabled the Internal Cache (I read a post which advised to disable the L2 cache but I have not been able to find it in the BIOS ? when it boots up it says L2 Cache = Pipeline Burst). The install then took several hours to complete but this worked overnight.

Now, after booting up ok, I get Blue Screens of Death!:

Ex: A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C000CC1B ? The current application will be terminated.

Each time I hit enter, the address changes until it finally goes black.

I just also replaced the battery. After booting I got

Error loading powerprof—-, or corrupt file errors, then the BSOD w/fatal exceptions.

I also Loaded BIOS Setup defaults, sameproblems.

Please help??.
