Web Browser Closes Randomly!

My Internet Explore closes while I was attempting to open www.gateway.com. It would let me browse yahoo and other sites, but as soon as I enter the “.” for “.com” after gateway it closes automatically. I remember it did this before-(not with gateway). I am running XP Pro.
