Weird IE mouse pointer problem

When I start IE on my home Compaq PC using DSL, it comes up right away, but the pointer does not become active for about 5 to 10 minutes after that. The pointer moves, but doesn’t do anything when clicked, passing the pointer over hypertext does notchange to a finger, etc. After it wakes up, it works fine!
Any ideas what could be causing this?
