I just did a clean install of vista home basic, and everything works well except the most piculiar problem regading the sound.
The only way I can hear sound, regardless of the source, is to click on the volume slider bar and hold it up. If I release the volume slider bar, the bar automatically drops down to zero by itself.!? Wierd.
I have tried the following
1. Update the device drivers: Windos replies that the drivers are the most current.
2. Uninstall the drivers: windows relaods the same drivers on reboot.
3. install the drivers from my motherboard cd (MSI P6N SLI – Intel based): No difference, the same problem occruse (even when I open up the Realtek software and try to adust using the slider bar within that sotware – it sill slides back to zero).
4. Download and install the drivers from MSI website using the most recent vista32/64 drivers: no difference, same results.
I’ve also tried playing with a number of settings in “sound,” but making changes to the settings does no good either.
I have been on the phone with MS support for a couple of hours and the tech is completely lost, says he’s never heard of that kind of a problem before. We finally gave up.
So, if anyone knows why vista prefers silence, please let me know.
BTW, I’m sure its unrelated, but I can’t highlight and select text using my mouse. I cannot select text on webpages, not even the text I am now typing. I bet it is unrelated, but if anybody knows what may be going on, I would appreciate some info.
