Looking through a recent IT Career NetNote, I can’t help but wonder just what do people mean when they talk about IT? (‘… career in IT’, ‘IT Manager’, etc.) Some seem to imply that any position that involves touching a keyboard is an IT position. In other places, only the guys who string CAT5 cable or install upgrades on the SQL database server are IT personnel.
I’m a codeslinger. I write Windows apps and device drivers in ‘c’ or ‘c++’. I wouldn’t consider this an IT position, but a look throught the want ads seems to indicate that mine is not the majority opinion.
At your company, what does IT mean?
