What is NetBT?

I am looking to upgrade an application that uses Netbios messaging protocol, because I need to eliminate that usage. A proposed solution I have received uses a protocol called NetBT (sp?) and I am wondering if this could be the same wine in a different bottle, or if it will solve my problem.
