Whats really burning out IT techs?

by nzbn . Updated 20 years, 8 months ago

I have seen alot of posts from people about no longer having the enthusiasm of thier younger years in IT,
I’ve seen it happen myself one web developer I knew of one day suddenly decided to go crane driving instead – go figure 🙂

I am thinking that this is coming from IT techs not being “allowed” freedom outside of the workplace. Most contracts these days contain clauses like you cannot do any IT related work outside of work and if you do x company owns the copyright etc,

I even once had one manager offer me a job with that clause and another clause that said I could not do any related work for any other company for another three years after employment with his express written permission, then had the cheek to offer bottom dollar, you can guess what got said back.

I think that IT people such as ourselves given the freedom to enjoy our craft outside of business hours (Fair enough work is work inside bus hours)
for example over the next year outside of any work I am doing, I am going to be building a school managment system admittedly I plan to give the sms away for free to any school that wants it but I get to learn and explore ASP.Net, SQL Server (Having mainly worked in Oracle), XML and expand on the CSS controls I already know.

IT as a whole should start getting militant about the contracts that are being demanded of us. We are professionals capable of keeping to work inside of work hours so it should be no one elses business what we do outside of business hours.

Free your mind – Sorry had to do it (Matrix)
