When should annual Hardware & Maintenance contracts begin?

We are just kicking-off a large project which will deploy over $3M worth of new hardware and software licenses. The project will take 6 months to implement. Should we expect the clock to start ticking against the manufacturers? warranty/maintenance contracts when we receive the HW & SW at the beginning of the project ? or can we ask the manufacturers to start this after the project goes into production?
