Where did all my printers go and why?

On different platforms 98/nt4ws/w2k pro all printers are lost and a warm boot is required to get them back. This includes local and network printers. Is not related to one application seems to do it when print screen on the interenet as well as in office 2000, attachmate, and other apps.
Any idea’s?
