Which Windows to use?

I will be porting a system I developed under Solaris to a Windows Platform in the next few months. About 2/3 of the system will be rewritten in Java and the rest will remain C++.

Which Windows operating system should I use?

As I understand it, currently there is NT 4.0, ME, 2000 and XP (soon). What are the differences between them?
