Why is my Gateway Essential so sluggish.

I just upgraded my Gateway Essential PC from 128 to 384MB of RAM. It has a 19GB harddrive with 14GB free space. When I execute a program, i.e. Outlook Express, etc., the harddrive CRANKS and CHURNS and the mouse hangs. When the program is done executing, its o.k. Any help?
