Why Rear USB ports only

One of our guys just bought a nice Seagate external portable USB2 HDD. Works a treat but Seagate are specific in the install manual to plug it into a rear USB and not a front port or USB monitor port.
Any idea why this is? Anyone seen this request from other manufacturers of USB devices?
