Why win 98se hang when play midi file?

My win 98se hang or freezed when I played a midi file. Sometimes, the midi will be played for 5-10 seconds before it happened. I couldn’t do anything except moved the mouse’s cursor around the desktop only. To correct problem, I restart the PC. Helps are greatly appreciated.
