win 2000 Pro Application Monitoring

We have a PC running win2k pro that currently runs a critical outage handling system. We are getting ready to put that system into production and would like to have a way to check on that application to make sure it is still running and responding properly. If not have a way to sound an alarm or restart the application. Something like that. Anyone have a good way to take care of this?
