Win 98 and Win 95 not Talking

I have a client that has 2 machines that are connected by a direct cable (CAT5). The 2 machines are no longer talking. They told me that the 2 machines used to talk and share printers. I tried static and dynamic IP and that did not work. Is there some thing that I am missing. I worked for several hours. I replaced one of the network cards in the 98 machine. The connection is there. The lights light up on the cards, but they do not see each other in Network Neighborhood.
