Win 98 Memory Limitations

Can anyone verify that Win 9X and ME has problems with more than 256M of RAM? I had a compute that crashed and was told by the vendor that this is a problem with Win 9X and ME. After searching the Microsoft site, I couldn’t find any verification of this. Any have more information?
