I have come across this problem a couple of times already on networked computers.
After installing network software (Windows networking, in both cases), I find that I now have a phantom user on the system.
All the shared resources on both networks are defined to reconnect at logon. Operating systems are win95 & win98.
When the computer is started, the networking is not reset. In order to get access to shared resources on another computer, it is necessary to LOG OFF…, and restart as another user. Upon restart the network starts properly.
Any idea on how to re-establish a single user environment? The last time this happened, on Windows 98, was after installing IE5.5. Also have been getting a lot of problems with WININIT.EXE forcing a shutdown right at startup – may be related?
Thank you,
