Win ME freezes while upd files startup

by crichard . Updated 24 years, 6 months ago

I just installed Norton Antivirus 2002 Trialware on a clients computer. First I uninstalled the previous version of Norton and rebooted. Then 2002 was installed and the computer rebooted. After that, liveupdate ran automatically along with registration and a reboot was required.

From that point on, the computer reboots only to the

“Veuillez patienter pendant la mise ? jour de vos fichiers de configuration. Cela peut prendre plusieurs minutes…”

(“Please wait while windows updates yourfiles. This can take several minutes”) – Windows is in french, Norton is in English).

The computer stays there but the hard drive light flashes so if it stays on for a while, the following message appears:

“Windows n’a pas pu mettre ? niveau le fichier %1 ? partir de %2 %1: %2”

(Translation: Windows was unable to update file %1 from %2 %1: %2)

This message can appear several times but Windows gets no further than this. I tried safe mode but windows goes to the same place. Reinstalling Windows also goes to the same place.

I cannot restart my clients computer properly without a reformat.

Please advise if you have any suggestions.

Thanks
