Win ME missing boot record

by colin.mac . Updated 24 years, 1 month ago

I’ve got a laptop running Win ME, when I try to boot up I get a “HDD error press F1” to continue message. A few beeps are released from the machine before it asks me to insert a boot up disk into the floppy drive. I insert the recovery boot up diskinto the machine but the system can’t read or access from the C: drive. I’ve removed the Hard drive from the laptop and connected it up to an external mini hard drives PCMCIA cable and connected it to another laptop. The drive shows up as F:Removable Disk, which is quite normal, then when I try to run Norton Disk Doctor on it it doesn’t get past the Boot Record before I receive an error message saying “couldn’t read from Drive F:”.

I’m thinking a virus has wiped the boot sector of my disk, I may be wrong, if anyones come accross this before could they let me know how to solve it. Any info on whether the data on the drive will still be accessible would be helpful.

Men E thnx
