Win XP and ME conflict

I have Win ME on partition 1 and XP on partition 2. My XP refuses to start and gives the error message ” Disk error restarting installation”. This keeps recurring, because I do not want to format the hard drive,What do I do? The startup menu takes over and times out in 2 seconds.
