Win XP pro on a linux network

My office just got a new computer, win xp pro. The network is a Linux network. I cannot map the shared drive that we all map to. In our case the location is \\mail\public and we use J: as the drive. I can ping all the IP’s, I can go to the internet using the shared internet connection. What am I missing? Any ideas?
