win xp pro won’t log in

I just did a clean full install of win xp pro and on first boot at the logon screen, after entering the password I get the message:
System can not log you on due to the following error: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Please try again or consult your system administrator. OK
Then the log on screen reappears and a did you forget your password Please type it again. this becomes and endless loop. I even booted in safe mode and the Administrator and user logins produce the same error. Any suggestions or should I just reinstall?
