Win2K Lockup with Games

Win2K is locking up (freezes) when playing games. I have Gateway Athlon K7 – 600 MHz and a high end NVidia GeForce card. I didn’t have these problems in Win 98 SE.
Any advice on where to look for the problem or how to correct it would be appreciated. Thanks!
