We have a small network here, 1 NT 4 Server, 2 Win9x machines, and 1 Win2K Pro machine. All of these machines are able to see each other on the network, and share resources, so I know the LAN hardware is working properly. However, for some reason,the Windows 2000 Pro machine is unable to access the internet’s DNS servers. Since it has no way to find out that www.microsoft.com is 207.46.230.220, it cannot retrieve web pages.
This machine was purchased from Dell as a network workstation, andcame with the OS installed and configured…all I did was add the settings specific to our network. I have checked them with our ISP, and they are correct.
Dell refuses to help, claiming that it is our ISP’s problem. Our ISP has tried to help,but doesn’t know what else to do. Neither do I, and not being able to access the internet with this computer is somewhat problematic for us (it makes it more difficult to get the latest service packs for it to begin with).
This computer is in the same position relative to the firewall as all of the other computers on the network, so I know it isn’t a firewall problem. I have also installed Service Pack 2 in hopes that it was a bug that the SP would fix…didn’t help.
So…I have 250 techpoints for the first person to provide a solution that works.
How do I get this Windows 2000 Professional computer to access the Domain Name System?
