Win2k Pro printer loss

On serveral occasions a new installed version of Win2k Pro will lose the printer settings. The printer window shows nothing and hangs. All printer assigned are ip addressed.This has happened several times only to warrent a reinstallation of Win2k Pro. What is the problem and how can I fix it without re-installing?
