Win2K Server boot problem

by johnj . Updated 24 years, 1 month ago

My installation of Win2K at home developed a peculiar boot problem over the weekend. It gets as far as the splash screen, the screen blanks as if it ‘s going to the logon window, then the machine reboots. The reboot is accompanied by a click from the monitor as it changes sync (that’s normal) and a click from the PC (that’s not normal). Choosing safe mode or VGA mode or any other boot option results in the same behavior.
Prior to this total failure, Win2K was behaving very oddly — I could not get a proper display of the Add/Remove Programs window (no icons) and Windows Explorer would occasionally not show any icons either. I have checked it three times for viruses, and each time it has come out clean.
My machine is a dualboot Win2K/Win 98 PC, so I do have access to the drives. Does anyone have a clue what’s wrong and how to fix it, short of reinstalling Win2k?
