Win2K update folders $NtUninstallQ#####$

The folders generated after applying updates to Windows, $NtUninstallQ######$, take up about 46 MB on my machine. I know it’s not huge, but are these files needed only in an emergency? I’ve encountered no problems so far; is it safe to remove them, and how to?
