Win95 not shutting down with new drive

I’ve recently added a new fixed disk to a workstation, configured as the slave. I have two problems:

1. Occasionally, the workstation will not finish shutting down. i.e. the “It is now safe to shut down your computer” message does not appear. Powering off the workstation does not appear to do any harm, and the chkdsk does not run the next time the workstation is booted. However, it’s annoying.

2. The drive is only 10GB, but Win95 only recognized 8GB. I expected to be able to create two 5GB partitions, but so far have not had any luck.

Any advice?
