Win98 & Internal Modem

I hae a WIN 98 system and the modem lost its mind. I had to reinstall the internal Lucent MDP7800 modem. It will not install and operate. I throw on an exernala and life is good. Removed the MDP7800 and now at boot up it keeps searching for PCIadapter file that does not exist. How can I kill that?
