Win98 logon

Dam I am going nuts!! I installed a fresh system with win98se on it, I set up a user name and password, so that I can logon and also see the network. When the system reboots, instead of asking fior the user name and password, it opens windows already logged on. I have never seen this. Then after a few re-boots, windows reports a registry problem, and goes back to last known good one, and voila, no users again!!

Any ideas??
