Fault Presentation: Computer crashes completely when the modem attempts to handshake with any ISP.
System: Upgraded PC clone/450 Pentium II (A)/64MB RAM/ Win98/ Intel
Motherboard/ ATI Rage Pro AGP 2X/ Sound Card SB 16 PCI/ Modem 3Com PCI/.
Clean Installation no errors showing anywhere in systems device file, no IRQ
conflicts….nothing!!!. Machine looks absolutely spot-on and works perfectly at
94% system availability.
Problem: When an attempt is made to dial out the modem kicks in, dialsout
perfectly and attempts to handshake the dialled location. The handshaking
‘warble’ continues for about 8 seconds and…CRASH…..everything locks up….and it’s a real switch off jobbie – not just Ctrl-Alt-Del and free up the application.
Actions to date:Two clean re-installs of Win98, substitute everything (all PCI
cards) except motherboard and processor.
I am certain the fault lies with the motherboard.
Has anyone else had experience of this fault.
