Windows 2000 backup restores only direct

i have configured win 2000 server to take backup every night 8 o?lock. it starts and takes backup every
day, but when i tried to restore one of the files, it couldnt restore it. and i found that backup is
being taken for diectories and sub directories only. not a single file has been backed up till now.
which is sense less.

can any one please help me out of this ?
