Windows 2000 install problem

I have been updating a fairly new (less than 2 years old) machine from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. All hardware passed the compatibility test and install has been no problem until I get to the “Install Devices” screen. At some point along the way on that screen, it goes black, with a blinking cursor and ‘ marks all over the screen.
Has anyone seen anything like this? In all of my installs, I have not seen anything of this nature.
