I am unable to sucessfully install Windows XP or Windows 2000 on a particular box. I’ve installed these OS’s on hundreds of other machines, but this problem seems unique.
System Specs:
ABIT BP6 Motherboard
Dual Celeron 500mhz (66mhz FSB)
Voodoo3 PCI Gfx card
Western Digital 14 GB HardDrive (Connected to the normal IDE slots on the MB, not using the ATA100 slots at all) – IDE Slot I
Generic 56X CD-ROM Drive – IDE Slot II
320MB PC133 SDRAM (2x128MB and 1x64MB)
I boot from CD-ROM (Have also tried Harddrive, same problem). I load the Highpoint drivers to support the ATA/100, even though it’s not being used (this is a necessity for Windows installation with this MB). The blue non-graphical install screen appears, loads the Highpoint Drivers, but stops at “Starting Windows”. Even Num/CapsLock won’t respond on the keyboard. I eventually have to manually reboot (C-A-D does not work either).
I cannot get past this hanging point. Here are things I’ve already checked:
1. BIOS – Updated to a known working version (1.25) which is working on another BP6 MB I own.
2. Ribbon Cables – Replaced the IDE cables with known working ribbon cables.
3. Hard Drive – Tried an alternate HD
4. CD-ROM – Used an alternate HD
5. RAM – Swapped out DIMM’s with known working RAM
6. Processor Temp – Verified that Processor heat is at a consistant 108-120 Fh
7. HCL – All hardware is HCL compatible
This system has had Windows 2000 and then XP running on it for over a year. I cannot understand why I am unable to reinstall now.
Frankly, I’m at a loss as to why it’s hanging here, bt it does it every time. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!
