Windows 2000 trust to NT 4.0

I cannot establish a Trusted domain with NT 4.0. 2000 trust tells me the domain cannot be contacted. If I attempt to access the domian via active directory it tells me it is a pre-Windows 2000 domain, so I know it sees it. Any suggestions?
