Windows 95 to 98SE upgrade

Hi! My name is Dave and my computer has win 98 installed. The disk that came with computer is 98SE. Calling the computer maker they say to bad. My problem is my new digital camera and related items,ie: firewire reader, etc. require 98SE and many state original install only. (I have a firewire card installed) Is it safe to upgrade from my disk and should I install any service packs. Or do I need to start over with new drive and fresh install of 98SE.
