Windows 98

A friend has a IBM ThinkPad 390x running Windows 98. She informed me that, she put a virus in there via floppy. This “virus” crashed the machine. It seems to be doing some funky thinks I never experienced B4. It will not boot from the floppy, thethinkpad came with a recovery CD which will not work. I have tried to reformat the drive, but the same error is continuing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a new virus out that I am not aware of?
