Windows 98’s hanging problem

What can i use or do to correct this problem of windows 98? it hangs everytime after loading the operating systems, and then i can’t even reset the machine. the power has to be cut off, and then sometimes after that it does load and function well which is very seldom. no patches have been installed previously on the PC.
