windows explorer crashes while searching

Running Windows XP SP2 on Gateway E-4100 and Dell GX 620. When attempting a file search using the F3 key or the Start Menu, Windows Explorer crashes and generates a report for Microsoft. The exception number is 0xc0000005 and Event Viewer reports a fault bucket number 12710676. Can anyone help? TIA
