Windows Explorer greyed out?

After upgrading to IE 6.0 on a WIN98SE box, Windows Explorer’s left folders pannel is greyed out. All settings seem correct, but it just remains grey. The X is in the upper right of the box, but thats it. Any ideas as to why or how to fix this? Thanks.
